Known for his intimate portraits of working-class neighborhoods in the Southwestern United States, Louis Carlos Bernal captured photographs in the late 1970s and 1980s, drawing from the resonance of Catholicism, indigenous beliefs, and folk practices related to the land.
For Bernal, photography was a powerful tool to highlight individuals and communities that lacked visibility and influence.
Working in both black and white and color, he photographed the interiors of homes and their inhabitants, often presenting his subjects surrounded by the objects around them: framed portraits of family members, religious images and statues, small floral shrines, and elements of contemporary popular culture.
The first major scholarly work on Bernal’s life and work, written by renowned historian Elizabeth Ferrer, *Louis Carlos Bernal: Monografía* is the definitive work on an essential photographic artist.
