For her directorial debut, The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola invited British fashion photographer Corinne Day to join her on set.
Renowned for her raw and grunge photographs of iconic 1990s models, Day’s portrayal of feminine beauty found a kindred spirit in Coppola, whose debut marked the beginning of her spontaneous and empathetic representations of femininity.
Compiled from Day’s original negatives, this volume—released to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of The Virgin Suicides—offers a fascinating and previously unseen glimpse into Coppola’s enigmatic staging of the Lisbon sisters and their suburban surroundings.
In Day’s photographs, the lush mystique of Coppola’s set is revealed in candid images of the young cast at work and in between takes, their poses and pensive expressions capturing the intimate and collaborative atmosphere of the shoot.
Complete with new texts by Sofia Coppola and Jeffrey Eugenides, this volume creates a compelling dialogue between Eugenides’s original novel and Coppola’s cult film adaptation.
