The scientific classification is followed by general information and advice on mushrooms, including their chemical composition, nutritional value, possible culinary uses, harvest periods and locations, as well as information on treating poisonings and mushroom cultivation.

Author: Paul Dumée (1849–1930), first-class pharmacist and renowned mycologist of his time, author of numerous works on mushrooms.
Illustrator: Aimé Bessin (1870–1942), son of an engraver and Parisian naturalist painter, worked in gouache and watercolor, and contributed to many naturalist publications on a wide range of subjects.
