In 1911 Balthasar Merz opened his textile factory in Germany, but production was finally stopped in the 1960s. Merz b. Schwanen is then re-established in 2011 by the descendants of the founder. The brand retains the production method of its founder, the products are still produced in Germany using 32 "loopwheeler", a kind of circular knitting machines, as in the beginning in the brand.
