A vital element at the heart of the ecosystem — a symbol of longevity, diversity, beauty, and resilience in the face of all kinds of attacks — and a source of inspiration for artists across continents, the tree also lives in the imagination: its branches, and its subterranean strength, nourish sacred texts, myths, and secular literature alike.
The tree is the heart of an ecosystem bringing together animals, plants and fungi that depend partly or entirely on it — just as it may depend on them to reproduce and spread its seeds. Insects and plants need each other to ensure their offspring. Part of these interspecies relationships escapes our view because it unfolds underground. A tree’s root system allows it to communicate with its neighbors.
The word “book” comes from the Latin liber, which also refers to the inner layer of a tree’s bark. A beautiful mise en abyme unfolds here: books are themselves supports for representing the very trees that gave them life, transforming the rich collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France into a forest of paper.
