Donald Judd Writings is the most comprehensive collection of the artist’s writings ever published; it brings together his best-known essays, lesser-known texts, unpublished manuscripts, and letters. In addition, this collection also includes unpublished academic dissertations and hundreds of previously unpublished notes, which constitute an essential part of Judd’s writing practice.
Judd’s early published writings, consisting largely of commissioned art criticism, defined the terms of art criticism in the 1960s. His essays written while a student at Columbia University in New York, published here for the first time, contain the seeds of his later writings and allow readers to trace the evolution of his critical style. The writings that followed Judd’s early reviews are no less significant, but they were often published in limited editions and have remained largely inaccessible until now. Judd’s unpublished notes are transcribed from his handwritten reviews and reactions on topics ranging from the politics of his time to the literary texts he admired most. In these intimate reflections, we see Judd’s thinking in its purest form—a mind that continues to grapple with the issues of his time, to delve deeper into them, to shift positions, and to demonstrate the intensity of thought that continues to make Judd such a formidable figure in contemporary visual art.
