Robert Frank, nicknamed the “poet with a camera,” best known for his book*The Americans*, first published by Delpire in 1958 and which revolutionized street photography, began his artistic career amid the vibrant atmosphere of postwar Paris. The stays he made there between 1949 and 1953 influenced the rest of his life and his art.
It was in 1949 that he created*Mary’s Book*, a chronicle of Parisian life intended for his fiancée, who had remained in the United States.
This scrapbook is a testament to great poetry. These few pages, nestled one within the other, combining cut-and-pasted photographs and handwritten text in a subtle blend of French and English, touch the reader with their simplicity and beauty.
A pivotal moment in Robert Frank’s personal life, it also marks the birth of his practice of the photo book.
This distinctive way of arranging images on the page would be found in all his books.
